The National Institute For Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is the recognized leader in automotive technician testing and certification endorsed by 40 professional associations and trade groups. Its number one goal has always been to improve the quality of automotive service and repair throughout the nation. By passing ASE voluntary certification tests, an automotive repair technician earns the most valuable credential available in the profession.

The eight regular automotive test areas include: engine repair, automatic transmission/transaxle, manual drive train and axles, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical systems, heating and air conditioning, and engine performance.

A technician that is certified in all eight automotive areas (A1 - A8) earns a Certified Master Auto Technician (CMAT) certification. Twenty six percent of all ASE certified automobile technicians hold the CMAT certification.

A technician that passes the Advanced Engine Performance test earns the L1 certification. This test was designed to measure a technician's ability to diagnose and repair today's complicated engine control systems. Eight percent of all ASE certified automobile technicians hold the L1 certification.

The ASE certification tests are constantly being upgraded to reflect the advancements in technology. The certifications are valid for five years and at the end of that period a technician must again pass the tests to remain certified.
